Former ‘Bachelor’ Star Colton Underwood Comes Out As Gay

In an exclusive interview with Robin Roberts on the show Good Morning America, Colton Underwood announced that he is gay. The interview aired on Wednesday, and he was quoted saying: “I’ve run from myself for a long time. I’ve hated myself for a long time. And I’m gay. And I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. And the next step in all of this was sort of letting people know.”

He added that he is completely nervous and worried about what the future has in store for him. He began living the truth and embraced the journey after 2020. “Look at themselves in the mirror and figure out who they are and what they’ve been running from or what they’ve been putting off in their lives”, he said.

The interviewer, Roberts, who is also gay, complimented him, saying that she could see both the joy and relief in his eyes. To this, Colton responded that he is emotional in a happy way, and this the healthiest and happiest he has ever been in life.

Underwood further added that he went through a storm of emotions in his mind and had difficulty accepting who he was. Also, his wake-up call to embrace himself was when he felt he would rather die than admit openly that he is gay.

“There was a moment in L.A. that I woke up and I didn’t think I was gonna wake up. I didn’t have the intention of waking up. And I did,” he mentioned in his interview. Additionally, he said that he had several instances of deep suicidal thoughts, which motivated him to change the course of his life and accept who he was. When Robert inquired how the women of the “Bachelor” would respond when they feel that they have been misled, he said that he could understand their thoughts and their position.

“I’ve thought a lot about this too, of, ‘Do I regret being the Bachelor and do I regret handling it the way that I did?’ I do. I do think I could’ve handled it better, I’ll say that.” He said in the interview.

He further mentioned that he genuinely wished he hadn’t dragged so many people into the mess of figuring out his identity and his own life. Also, he apologized to the women and the people related to the “Bachelor” show. Later, he also thanked them as he said they were instrumental in helping him make the decisions and be in the position he is now.

Painfully, he added that when he was titled ‘The Bachelor’ on the show, he thanked God for making him straight and silently hoped that he would get to lead a normal life, a wife and a kid of his own. But he also said that right from the age of 6, he felt he was different and was way more emotional than other boys in his class.

Raised as a Catholic, Colton remembers learning in the bible that being gay is a sin and recollected people using the word gay as a connotation of negativity.

Wrapping Up

Colton said that he hasn’t found that emotional connection with someone yet, but is looking forward to meeting someone special. As a piece of advice for people struggling to own their truth, Colton said: “But if I had to go back and give anybody advice, I mean, you’re gonna get through it is what I would tell myself. Keep fighting for yourself. Keep choosing yourself every morning. And when the time’s ready or when the time’s right and you’re ready, do it on your own time.”
