Motorists throughout the country are experiencing the squeeze as fuel prices rise, with truckers bearing the brunt of the burden.

“It used to cost approximately $800 to load up a 250-gallon tanker – now we’re speaking about $1,000 [to] $1,100,” said Jacinda Duran, a third-generation truck driver who operates for Blackburn Energy.

“It’s getting worse every day; you can see gasoline costs rise by 40 cents, 50 cents, or even 60 cents overnight. A typical gas week cost $1,500 [or] $1600. It’s now $2,400 each week.”

As per AAA, the estimated price of a gallon of standard gasoline in the United States was $4.236 on Thursday, while diesel oil was $5.053 per gallon. The usual price of a gallon of normal petrol in Los Angeles County, the country’s most populous, hit a new high of $6.011 on Tuesday.

Duran has been operating with Convoy Co-Founder Grant Goodale since 2017 and has collaborated with the digital cargo system since 2017.

As per the American Trucking Association, the trucking industry requires an additional 80,000 truckers to function effectively, a problem that has been exacerbated by the epidemic. “A bulk of the cargo that’s carried in this state has gone under contracts, and those shipping rates are a determined year or occasionally, which makes it very difficult for the organizations that are determining those cargo costs,” Goodale said.

Truckers earned an average annual pay of $47,130 in 2020, contrasted to $110,000 in 1980. Furthermore, according to statistics from the US Department of Transportation, as of February 2021, there were 996,894 for-hire vehicles, 813,440 private transporters, and 83,235 other federal motorized carriers in the US.

Nevertheless, President Joe Biden called for electrical automobiles to account for half of all vehicle sales in the United States by 2030. The question is whether or not the freight sector will follow suit.

“Electrical trucks and automated lorries will dramatically alter this industry,” Goodale predicted, adding, “The truth is electric trucks will have an impact in widescale convoys and private fleets as recharging and transport systems can be constructed at the establishments where the trucks pick up and drop off.”

But it’s a different scenario for little truckers like Jacinda.

Drivers, according to Goodale, are “reliant on the public network to meet their dynamic work model, where they move everywhere and operate in many cases with smaller organizations that either won’t or can’t afford to put in recharging facilities.”
